Neurofeedback has been well-documented for more than 20 years. With realistic goals and a highly trained specialist it has been successful for many children as well as adults.
What is Neurofeedback?
Brainwave patterns are a constant for everyone. Both adults and children with ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities, anxiety, and depression may have either slower, faster or unbalanced ratios of brainwave activity.
Neurofeedback is operant conditioning of the EEG. It is simply brain exercise that retrains the EEG patterns of the brain activity. It trains the brain to produce appropriate and effective electrical activity.
How Does Neurofeedback Work?
With highly advanced and computerized equipment, it is possible to record real-time activity in the brain, and for the specialist to identify patterns and pathways and help you develop new, appropriate brain activity.
There is no pain as a series of sensors are placed on several places on your head.
You or your child watch specialized neurofeedback videos and/or play specialized neurofeedback computerized games while the specialist monitors and observes the presenting brain activity. When the EEG pattern is abnormal the video/game will stop; when the activity level is appropriate the video game will play, therefore rewarding appropriate brain activity.
Ongoing evaluation of each Neurofeedback session will monitor progress and identify direction of treatment.
How Long is the Treatment Course?
Each patient and each condition is unique, so it is not possible to apply one rule to all. Generally, it is best if you can commit to twice a week, for a total of 20 to 60 sessions, although this can be flexible according to need.

Our son Rory has done two rounds of intensive Neurofeedback with Lori in the past twelve months. We began just after his 5th birthday. We initially had a lot of anxiety about his willingness to tolerate the brain map and the Neurofeedback itself, but Lori’s calm and soothing manner with him made it very very easy. He enjoyed his sessions and had no problem with the cap, or sitting still. He loved the videos she prepared and requested certain ones. As for the efficacy, we of course are doing other therapies and interventions as well, but it’s hard to ignore the impact the Neurofeedback has had. Rory is more engaged, his verbal responses are much faster and more appropriate, and he’s more socially interested and interactive. In school he is able to absorb the material better in a group setting-less zoning out, and can keep up with the class work. We are thrilled with his progress and will continue with Neuorfeedback as and when Lori is able to come to Hong Kong.
